Which Pressure Washer ?

Info & Technical Stuff

When buying a
High Pressure Pumping Kit the first machine you buy is the
cheapest if you get the right machine. - Buy a machine because its cheep and
you can end up buying twice to get what you really want. Look around my
sites and then please give me a call or visit before you spend your money. I
have built up many “kits” for people over the years to suit they needs. It
might be an electric pump or engine driven one with a hot-box (for hot
water) can be supplied with Quick Release fittings on hoses and lances with
easy to change nozzles, it’s up to you. – The system is built around you and
your needs. We can supply pressure washers for domestic and commercial use,
either electric or engine driven.
We are suppliers of the Dual Pump range of pressure washers as well as the Kranzle range. The range includes high pressure water jet systems from 2 to 120 kw, 100 to 2500 bar, hot and cold and water flow rates from 420 to 1800 l/h. Separate heating modules are available as well as combined units For Heavy Duty Pressure Water Jetters look no further than the Falch range. Ideal for; Commercial / Industrial use.
Pressure is measured in psi or Bar

There is 14.5 psi in 1 Bar
Flow is measured in Litres per minute (lpm)
To compare pump outputs there is a simple way –
Take the “Flow” multiply by “Pressure Bar” then divide by 600
Eg;
A pump rated at 7 lpm at 120 bar would be 7 x 120 = 840 divide by 600 = 1.4
Call this the cleaning capacity.
Now take a pump rated at 11 lpm flow at 135 bar (like the K135)
11 x 135 = 1485 divide by 600 = 2.47
That’s over 40% more cleaning power
If you do the same for an engine driven pressure washer like the Zeta the cleaning
power would work out at 10 – need I say any more.
What Kind of Pressure Washer do I need ?
Well it all depends on what you want it to do, if it’s just for washing the car and may
be the back steps then a Kranzle K7-120 or K1150 will do nicely.
If however you want it to clean a small patio then an up grade to the likes of the K115 would be a better bet. You see the K7-120 will deliver 7 lt per min flow of water (lpm) where as the K115 will deliver 10.3 lpm and has a bigger motor.
More flow is so important, why?
Take a boy on his bike and he hits a wall going 15 mph, apart from a few scratches and a bruise or two that’s all that happens, but if a bus hits the same wall at still only 15 mph then the wall has gone!!
A litre of water weighs 1kg so increase the flow from 7 to 10 lpm and you increase the weight of water hitting the surface by 30% per minute – makes all the difference.
Is the patio a bit larger? If so then go for the largest motor you can use on a single phase electric supply (13 amp socket).-
You can ONLY get so much out of a 13 amp electric supply NO MATTER WHAT MAKE & no matter what anything you may be told. 120<135 Bar pressure at around 10<11 lpm flow is the most you can get from that sort of electric supply and if you intend using an extension lead then use one that is HEAVY (2.5mm2). To get anymore pressure and flow from electric then it has to be 3 phase.
The Kranzle K135 is such a machine at the top of the output for single phase supply, we have one built into a van system, we use this connected to a Falch Boiler and the two together will produce 11 lpm flow at 120 bar and the Falch heats the water to 98c this is hot / steam, we can use it ALL DAY. If fact we run it 6<9 hours a day, day after day.
There are several pumps in this bracket not just the K135, the K145T has a hose reel build on and the Q11140, Q5599TST also fall into this same group with options of reels and / or build in water tank.

As to Reels;
If you want to be very portable than forget the reel as it’s not so easy to lift into a car etc, but it’s like a lot of things in life “its horses for courses”.

Dirtkiller – What’s a Dirtkiller ?
It will increase the cleaning effect of the pressure washer much the same way as a rotary (turbo) nozzle will. It will make a pump rated at say 1875 psi (130 Bar) work like it is powered by a pump delivering 3700 psi (255 Bar) – But (there is always a but) you can do damage on delicate surfaces with such a nozzle but it has it’s place.

Flat surfaces cleaners ?
Any pump with a flow of 11 lpm at 130 Bar will work a flat surface cleaner but on hard to clean surfaces like moss growing between block pavers you may be disjointed (no you will be) in the speed that you can achieve. A flat surface cleaner has 2 x nozzles, as there are two they will have to be half the size compared with a single nozzle on a standard lance. So if it’s a 11 lpm pump there will be only 5.5 lpm coming out of each nozzle but the pressure will remain the same but that’s not enough.
If you increase the flow to 15 lpm you start to get somewhere even at the same pressure but if you were to use a flat surface cleaner with a pump delivering 15 lpm at 200 bar then things get even better. For someone cleaning large areas then 15<20 lpm at 200<250 bar is a must.

Have I got enough water flow from my tap ?
Most outside taps only run at between 8 < 15 lpm flow.
An easy way to test the flow is to measure the amount of water that flows into a bucket in a minute. If it falls below the amount the pump requires then a water butt / tank / buffer tank, call it what you like is needed. I often build such a tank using a wheelie bin for customers. If you connect the tank to the water supply first before getting the rest of the gear out then the tank starts to fill. You very rarely keep your hand on the trigger all the time, so when you move kit around, have a cupper or what ever the tank can catch up. The higher the flow of the pump and / or the slower the flow from the tap the larger the tank needs to be.
Pump Speed ?

I am a bit old fart and like big pumps run at slow speeds, they will last a lot longer but (there's that word again) the outlay cost is higher.
Most electric motors run at 1450 rpm that's fine but to get more out of a pump using smaller pump & motor some are available that run at 2900 or more. They tend to be cheaper than one's that run at 1450 rpm but, in my opinion they are ok for short time use but if you require hours on end then go for one that runs at 1450.
The same applies to engine driven pressure washers. Some are direct drive so they run at engine speed others are driven through a reduction gearbox, go for this the reduction gearbox every time if the pocket will allow.
Hope this all makes some sense.
Any questions ask Malcolm

Large units could may be placed on lease.

Now you have decided on which pressure washer
When using your pressure washer for cleaning, there are specially formulated detergents that can be used, depending on what job you are doing. For example, if you are cleaning your car, use the detergent with wax for extra shine.
Given the pressure of the water coming from the pressure washer, safety is important. Wear protective goggles and shoes – matter may bounce into eyes and spray will hurt if it hits your feet. For the same reason never point the spray at anyone. As with any electrical equipment, take care when near water.
