Graffiti Removal -  is an “art” in it’s self as there is no exact science to removing graffiti despite whatever some may say. Surface types, paint & markers differ making the removal sometimes difficult and time-consuming.

Attempts to remove graffiti using harsh chemicals or abrasives are used by some and this can cause permanent damage to the masonry that may be worse than the graffiti itself to remove.  Some use high-powered washers using sand (grit blasting), they blast off the graffiti yes but take half the stone work with them -  This is not the answer as the damage to the stone face can be horrendous, the way forward has to be “softly softly”.

Malcolm uses a softly softly approach, no sand blasting but a careful assessment of the site to obtain the best level of cleanliness without doing detrimental damage to the surface.

Before treatment over the whole area commences a test area is done to help fine tune the method to be used, local stone/brick etc can and does vary from site to site.
Sometimes under fresh graffiti one finds a “smiley” another mural or tag that was done prior, this adds to the degree of skill required in leaving the site “clean”.

Most graffiti is made with spray paints. Although a number of solvents and paint strippers are capable of dissolving or breaking down these paints, some may permanently discolor or stain the masonry surface; as a result the remaining paint may become more difficult, or even impossible to remove.

Paints that have been on the surface for several weeks or months; the processes of hardening is likely to be complete or well-advanced; the solubility of the paint is reduced and it will be more difficult to remove than newly painted graffiti. – A good reason to act quickly.

The pigment or the binder of the paint may leave residues in or below the surface of the stone. These residual stains or ”graffiti ghost" such as those from any kind of red paint or the fine black pigments use in spray paints, may be particularly difficult to remove.

For brickwork and stone use a Porous Surface Graffiti Remover like - Graffiti Remover XG ~ Graffiti Remover XP ~ HD Paint Stripper.

After using this you well need to apply "Shadow Remover" to remove the ghosting left.

On Non Porous Surfaces use something like  - Graffiti Remover XNP ~ GRAFFITI REMOVER ULTIMATE XU.

HD HEAVY DUTY Paint Stripper

A very powerful solvent based paint stripper / graffiti remover

5 Lt Can - A very powerful solvent based paint stripper / graffiti remover for removing paints & graffiti from hard surfaces. Can be used on stone / brick surfaces to remove paints and on wood as a paint stripper. Part No: C10505

Surface condition
It is recommended to adequately wash heavily contaminated areas by means of e.g. steam cleaning prior to the application of HD Paint Stripper to remove any moss, algae and grease etc.

Method for use
• Apply a heavy layer of HD Paint Stripper to dry surface.
• Do not brush any longer than necessary to avoid excessive solvent evaporation.
• Allow sufficient dwell time for effective stripping of the paint system.
• For heavy removal after first coat work more HD-Paint Stripper into blistered paint.
• Remove the mass with suitable scrapers or a jet of pressurized water.
• Remove residues with e.g. Solvent Cleaning (white spirit for wood) – Water for stone / masonry.
• Temperature of the substrate and stripper influence the activity of the paint remover.
• For effective stripping action observe a higher temperature than 15°C for paint remover as well as for the substrate.
• To avoid too fast solvent evaporation observe a maximum temperature limit of 35°C.

Do not use paint remover in bright sunshine.
Do not use Paint Remover together with alkaline paint removers.

A second coat may be needed.
If further applications are required, dry the area before re-applying.

PACK SIZE: Supplied in 5 Litre can COVERAGE RATE: Apply a liberal coating with a brush, the time required for penetration varies according to the thickness and age of the material to be removed. Should be applied at 5 m²/Litre. PREPARATION: Areas to be cleaned should be wetted prior to application to prevent streaking. APPLICATION: Apply undiluted Malcleanse Graffiti Shadow Remover with a bristle brush to the affected area, starting at the bottom edge and working upwards. More than one application may be required.
