Below is some info about Pressure Washers that may be of help

FOOD FOR THOUGHT !
Whilst the very cheap Pressure Washers (less than A FEW HUNDRED POUNDS) may look tempting, they don’t actually work very well. The fact is that all Pressure Washers need a high quality pump and motor, it is simply not possible to put quality components into a machine at this price.

A significant number of our customers are people who have bought one of these cheap machines from ‘The Internet’ or ‘The Home Shopping Channels’ – then discovered that the machine they have bought is virtually useless and then have to upgrade to a usable machine having wasted YOUR MONEY!

All my Pressure Washers are built to a high standard, built to be used and last. All the engines -  if I say they are HONDA then they are Honda and not a cheep “look a like” copy!

All the pressure washers on my site I can get SPARE PARTS for – Ask yourself if you can on the “stack’em high sell’em cheap” ones ?

Need a new or extra Hose or Gun – we waste so much time (your time as well) trying to fit up a gun or hose with the same FITTINGS to a cheep imported machine (some have way-out fitting sizes and couplers.) Some of the cheep imported washers do not have a name or model number on the PUMP – How the hell can we get spares for these? – you can’t – bin it!

Note:- You cannot GET MORE OUT THAN YOU PUT IN!

bulletIf you run "ANY MAKE" of pressure washer from a 13 amp socket you  can only convert this into about 10 lpm flow at about 125 Bar.

bulletTo get more flow and/or pressure you need a three phase supply (415 volts) or an engine driven machine.

bulletIf you use an "extension lead"  you must keep it as short as possible and it needs to be a heavy one - 2.5mm2 cable.

bulletWe supply Kranzle Pressure Washers - Why - They are distinguished by their extraordinarily high quality, extremely modern design, high grade material, long service life and economic efficiency. - The heart of each high-pressure washer is the pump. The Kranzle pump heads are made completely of forged brass to ensure top quality and long service life.
Plus the fact that I (Malcolm) likes a simple life - when we sell a Kranzle Pressure Washer we know that it will give very good service and this means less telephone calls and more time to go fishing!

Flow & Pressure

Flow now days is measured in LITRES PER MINUET = LPM

1 Imperia Gallon (UK Gallon) = 4.54609 Litres

1 US Gallon is only 0.83267418 Imperial (UK) gallon

1 US Gallon = 3.785411784 Litres

* Flow from an outside tap will vary - It may not be constant due to other making demands on the water elsewhere.

(To TEST THE FLOW - Use a bucket and measure how much water cones out in 1 minute)

If it is not at least 10% higher than what your pressure washer needs then its "NO GOOD" - Use a holding tank and draw from there.

ONLY USE A SMALL Pressure Washers direct from mains -

If a pressure washer pump is only partly starved of water then what is called Cavitation happens - Cavitation is, an undesirable occurrence. In devices such as pressure washers cavitation causes a great deal of noise, damage to components, vibrations, and a loss of efficiency.

Some think that if an outside tape delivers 10 lpm and the pressure washer needs 11 lpm then all what will happen is the flow rate of the pump will go down - RUBBISH - It will kill the pump very fast.

Pressure is measured in Bars or PSI

PSI = pound per square inch or, more accurately, pound-force per square inch

1 BAR = 14.5 PSI

So a pump that delivers say 2000 psi is the same as one that delivers 138 Bar

Electrical Horsepower (HP)

Electrical horsepower is used by the electrical industry for electrical machines and is defined to be exactly 746 W.

The nameplates on electrical motors show their power output, not their power input.

1 HP = 0.746 KW (Kilowatt)

So a 3 hp motor = 2.2 kw

What FITTING SIZE ?

To Start off with we get more trouble with fittings than any other products.
Below are some "tips" - forgive me if I sound like "teaching Granny to suck eggs" - but belive me !!!!!!!
So lets start from the begining.

Q) What is a MALE THREAD  & what is a FEMALE THREAD ?
A) A male thread screws into a female thread - as simple as that.

Below is a MALE Threaded Nipple (sometimes this is called a Hex Nipple)

Pipe Thread Sizes

BSP

British Standard Pipe thread (BSP thread) is a family of standard screw thread types that has been adopted internationally for interconnecting and sealing pipe ends by mating an external (male) with an internal (female) thread.

Two types of threads are distinguished:

bulletParallel ('straight') threads, BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel Thread), which have a constant diameter.
bulletTaper threads, BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper Thread), whose diameter increases or decreases along the length of the thread.
bullet

Q) What SIZE THREAD ?
A) Take a cross section measurement across the threaded end of a MALE fitting or the measurement across the inside of a FEMALE fitting. - LOOK IT UP ON THE CHART BELOW.

BSP FITTINGS

                             Cross Section Measurement
Fitting Size       Female      Male
1/8" BSP           8.566mm      9.728mm
1/4" BSP          11.445mm   13.157mm
3/8" BSP          14.950mm   16.662mm
1/2" BSP          18.631mm    20.955mm
3/4" BSP          24.117mm    26.441mm
1" BSP             30.291mm    33.249mm
1 1/4" BSP       38.952mm    41.910mm
1 1/2" BSP       44.324mm    47.803mm
2" BSP             56.656mm    59.614mm

METRIC FITTINGS

                             Cross Section Measurement

Fitting Size       Female      Male
M12                 10.105mm      12mm
M14                 11.835mm      14mm
M16                 13.835mm      16mm
M18                 15.294mm      18mm
M21                 18.294mm      21mm
M22                 19.294mm      22mm
M24                 20.752mm      24mm
M27                 23.752mm      27mm
M30                 26.211mm      30mm

Remember the Cross Section Measurement of a fitting is not the fitting size if it is a "BSP" THREAD - use the chart above.

Metric Fittings - the MALE is always Cross Section Measurement in "mm" the female will be smaller.

Metric threads are a little bit finer than BSP threads.

LOOK OUT FOR 1/2" BSP and M22 Fittings - they can look the same - take a good look and the M22 will be finer than 1/2

Now just when you think you got it all onboard - just to make things interesting there is a thread called  "NPT"

This is a USA thread and is not used much in the UK, BUT, yes there is always a BUT !  Some equipment and parts come in from across the "pond" and they can be a "B******"  to find high pressure fittings for.

NPT

National Pipe Thread Tapered Thread (NPT) is a U.S. standard for tapered threads used to join pipes and fittings.

  Cross Section Measurment
NPT FITTINGS
Fitting Size          Male    Threads per Inch
1/8" NPT               10.28mm     27 tpi
1/4"NPT                13.72mm     13 tpi
3/8" NPT               17.15mm     18 tpi
1/2" NPT               21.34mm     14 tpi
3/4" NPT               26.67mm     14 tpi
1" NPT                  33.40mm     11.5 tpi

Malcolm Smith Power Cleaning can supply NPT fittings (NPT to BSP)

High Pressure Hose Sizes

Pressure Washer Hose is graded by pressure, temperature, and fluid compatibility. The hose is built up with rubber and steel layers. A rubber interior is surrounded by multiple layers of woven wire and rubber. The exterior is designed for abrasion resistance.

It comes in TWO TYPES - 1 WIRE & 2 WIRE

1 WIRE Hose has 1 steel wire and in most cases will take pressures up to about 150 - 210 bar (3000psi) at a temperature of 150c

2 WIRE Hose has 2 steel wires and will take pressures up to about 400 bar (5800psi) at a temperature of 150c

The DN code is a code that rounds off the diameter of the pipe to get an even number to work with, not the exact diameter. The American version is called NPS and is in English units.

DN is the European version and is based on millimetres. For example, If you want 2" Pipe, NPS calls it 2" and DN calls it 50 mm. but the actual outside diameter is neither 2" or 50 mm. They just use these nice round numbers cause it is easier!

For PRESSURE WASHER High Pressure Hose - We in the UK commonly use Two BORE SIZES  (1/4" & 3/8")  sometimes a third (1/2")

The BORE SIZE or "id" can be referred to as below:-

NPS DN
mm
6
¼ 8
10
½ 15
¾ 20
1 25
32
40
2 50
65
3 80

Drain / Sewer Cleaning Hose

Most Drain / Sewer Hose because it has to be "flexy" is 6DN (1/8" Bore)

The Drain / Sewer Hose we supply is 6DN - 300 Bar rated - 100c - single wire braid & thin rubber cover.

Pressure Control Valves

You have to control the pressure on the output side pf a pressure washer pump.

To do this a "CONTROL VALVE" is needed.

Q - What is meant by a "by-pass"

A - When a control valve goes into by-pass it's when the trigger is released, the valve discharges the water back to the holding tank, on controlsets the waster is diverted straight back to the pump. If the water goes back to the pump then the pump must not be in this mode for very long (a few minutes at the most) as the water will get hot. However if the by-pass valve sends the water back to the holding tank then the water going through the pump is cold a no damage will be done due to hot water.

There are 4 Main types:-

Controlsets

Controlsets are trapped pressure valves with internal by-pass and  most have an integral low pressure chemical injection system built in.

These controlsets are usually only the smaller output pumps.

Pressure Regulating Valves

Pressure regulating valves are used to regulate pressure and protect the system when the discharge is closed.

Trapped Pressure Unloader Valves

Trapped pressure valves regulate the pressure and when in by-pass mode this type of valve maintains a constant line pressure with zero pump pressure but line pressure is trapped (high),

Flow Senstive Unloader Valves

Flow sensitive unloader valve regulate the pressure and when in by-pass mode this valve reduces the discharge line and pump pressure to zero

Safety Relief Valves

Safety relief valves are placed onto pumps (need to be fitted to larger pumps to protect the pump, system and people) - It is set to unload at a higher pressure than the control valve but still under the maximum system pressure. - IMPORTANT Safety Relief Valves must never be used in place of a pressure regulator or unloader valve.

NOZZLES

Nozzles are sized to the FLOW & PRESSURE of the PUMP
To find the right size nozzle look along the "TOP LINE" and find the Pressure output of your pump in bars.

Follow the column down untill you find the FLOW output (this is in litres per min).
Then follow the line across to the left and fine the nozzle size in the left hand column.

Quick Connect Pressure Washer Nozzles

These are constructed with a 11.6mm male plug that snaps into a quick female coupler on the end of the lance. This coupler contains an o-ring to facilitate a tight seal. All quick disconnect female couplers in a pressure washing system contain these o-rings. It's important that pressure washer nozzles snap tightly into the female coupler. These pressure washer nozzles are colour coded to indicate what pattern (degree) of fan spray they produce.

Use your Pressure Washer to clean and unblock DRAINS / PIPES etc..
DRAIN NOZZLES

Pick a Drain Nozzle to suit the output of your pump.
(use nozzle guide -
Most small pressure washers with an output of around 10 lpm at 140 Bar (2000psi) a 04 Nozzle will do.
If you have a bigger - say petrol driven pressure washer deliveing somewhere about 15 lpm at 200 Bar (3900psi) then use a 045 / 05 Size Nozzle.

A Drain / Sewer Nozzle WITHOUT a FORWARD facing hole will produce more thrust to help the hose work its way up the pipe - however if you have a forward FACING HOLE this will help to "push through" any blockage.

A "Rotating Nozzle" will clean the side walls of the pipe better but has a lot less thrust.

The other larger SEWER NOZZLES need high flow rate and/or  more pressure.
